Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between South Sea pearls and other cultured pearls?

South Sea pearls are the biggest and most premium pearls on the market, and produced in single large oysters. Farmed only in the cleanest, warmest seas, lack of suitable habitat makes producing these beauties increasingly difficult.

Other pearls, such as the Edison and freshwater pearls, are produced in mussels and oysters in a number of locations, shapes, sizes and colours. They are no less beautiful, but their size and more productive cultivation methods mean they are often better choices for those on a budget.

How should I care for and clean genuine pearl jewellery to preserve its luster?

Pearl jewellery can last for generations if cared for properly. They should be handled gently, and stored appropriately. Wipe them over with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wearing, and store them in a soft location that allows air to circulate.

Pearl strands are often hand knotted on silk, and may require restringing over time - this is a process that most pearl strands benefit from if worn regularly, and we are happy to arrange this for you. Contact us for more information.

Check the Nina's Jewellery Cleaning Guide for more information on how to care for your pearls.

Can pearl jewellery be exposed to water, perfumes, or hairspray?

In order to ensure your pearls long life and high lustre, you should avoid exposing your pearls to perfume, cosmetics and hairspray.

It is not recommended you wear pearls when swimming, sweating, showering or washing dishes.

If your pearls do get exposed to any of these substances, ensure you wipe them over with a damp cloth before storing them.
