Lab-grown vs. natural diamonds: What’s the real difference?

Natural (or mined) vs lab-grown diamonds is one of the most talked-about topics in jewellery right now. While they appear identical at first glance, their origin, value, and creation process tell two very different stories.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are created using advanced technology that replicates these natural conditions.

At Nina’s, our lab-grown diamonds are created using the Chemical Vapour Deposition method. A diamond seed is placed in a controlled chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. Over time, carbon atoms bond layer by layer, gradually forming a diamond with the same physical, chemical, and optical structure as those formed in nature.

Appearance: Can you tell the difference?

In short, no.

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically and optically identical. Even trained gemmologists cannot distinguish between them without specialised equipment.

Both can feature unique inclusions, giving each diamond its own character and fingerprint. When it comes to brilliance, fire, and durability, there is no visible difference to the naked eye.

Our in-house GIA qualified Gemmologist, Deb Turner advises: "As a gemmologist with experience in both natural and lab-grown stones, I can confirm that visual identification without equipment is impossible. While I can readily distinguish diamond simulants like Cubic Zirconia from natural diamonds, lab-grown stones require specialised instruments. Therefore, I depend on certifications and industry expertise when sourcing diamonds.

 

Value: Cost, rarity, and perspective

One of the most notable differences is price. Lab-grown diamonds are typically cheaper (approx 80% cheaper) often allowing clients to choose a larger or higher-graded stone within the same budget.

Natural diamonds, formed over billions of years, are finite and rare. This rarity has historically contributed to stronger long-term resale demand.

Lab-grown diamonds, while offering incredible visual value, do not currently hold the same resale performance due to increasing supply and evolving market conditions.

Neither is right or wrong. It simply comes down to what matters most to you, whether that is size, rarity, budget, or long-term value.

It is a common misconception that lab-grown diamonds are more environmentally friendly. This is not exactly the case. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds have environmental impacts, but they differ in type and scale.

Natural diamond mining can involve land and habitat disruption as well as water usage. However, modern practices continue to evolve with a stronger focus on responsible sourcing, land rehabilitation, and reduced environmental impact across the supply chain.

Lab-grown diamonds, however, require significant energy input during production. Their carbon footprint is generally larger, as it is  influenced by the energy source each lab uses during the growth process, which is typically heavily reliant on fossil fuels.
